Best Practices In Prepping an RV for Storage

Getting ready to take your RV out for summer adventures?

As you hit the road, it’s also a good time to think ahead. Whether you store your RV between weekend getaways or after the season ends, having a proper storage prep routine in place makes a big difference. These tips will help you protect your RV the next time it goes back into storage—so it’s ready to roll when you are.

Before Camping: RV Prep Checklist

1. Check the RV Exterior

Before going camping, check around your RV for any damage. Look for signs of cracks or leaks in the roof and body. Inspect the tires to make sure they are properly inflated, including the spare. Uneven wear or bulges could indicate a tire issue that needs attention before travel.

2. Clean the Interior and Exterior

After time in RV storage, dust, dirt, and musty odors may have built up. Clean the interior by vacuuming carpets and upholstery, wiping down surfaces, and airing out the space. Wash the exterior to remove dust and any bird droppings or pollen that may have accumulated. Open up the windows to air out and dry up after you clean.

3. Check Fuel Levels and Engine

Always check fluid levels, including engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. If it’s been a while since the RV was last driven, consider replacing old fluids. Make sure the fuel tank is full and the battery is fully charged to avoid unexpected stalls or system failures.

4. Test All Systems

To guarantee that your RV is working properly, test all systems: the water pump, water heater, electrical outlets, lights, and appliances. Make sure everything is functioning correctly so you’re not caught off guard when you’re miles away from help.

After Camping: Post-Trip RV Storage Checklist

1. Check Your Storage Areas

Before parking your RV after your trip, inspect the storage spot for sharp objects or uneven surfaces that could damage tires or the undercarriage. If you’re storing outdoors, try to park in a shaded or covered area to minimize UV exposure.

2. Clean & Inspect

Expect dirt, dust, and food leftovers after your camping. To remove all the particles, wipe down surfaces, vacuum the floors, and wash the exterior carefully. Dry everything out to ensure no water or moisture can cause mold buildup.

After cleaning, proceed to inspect the RV. Check everything for any damages and repair if needed. Also, check the battery’s health and don’t let it drain, as starting will be an issue if it’s emptied.

3. Cover and Store Safely

You want to cover your RV with a quality cover. If stored for the long term, use tire and breathable covers to protect from UV and weather damage. For the short term, block entry points for rodents and place an RV-safe moisture absorber.

4. Regular Maintenance

Even in storage, your RV needs periodic care. Set a reminder to check on it at least once a month. Look at tire pressure, battery charge, fluid levels, and any signs of pests or leaks. A little attention during the off-season helps avoid expensive repairs down the road.
